I'd say female; almost 100% sure!

I havnt kept Rams for a long while (over 5 years), and i thought the dorsal fin was a great indicator with sexing them. This is what i was taught. My understanding was the 3rd or 5th (can't remember which) spine on the dorsal fin was longer than the rest in males, with females not having it. I know they say fin-shape is not a good indicator with most cichlids, but with Rams i was told it was. I could be wrong, but me saying that makes me unsure what sex your Ram is. Everyone says female, but the second picture in both sets you posted make me believe male initially.

Just to throw a spanner in the works for everyones sexing :fun:

Honestly, I'd probably pick up a male. Explain to the shop that you may have to return it the next day depending on your fish at home.

If the fish end up lip-locking/squabbling whatever.. then you take it back and try a female.

The reason i'm suggesting to get a male is of course if you have 2 females you probably wouldn't know about it for a while, so by getting a male you may get a pair, or you may find out you need to take one back.

the only problem with that is,its a 100 mile round trip to the fish shop i buy my fish from!!!

Scotty is there any chance you could take a photo of the rams against a lighter background. Its a bit hard to see the Rams and it will help us sex it better.
