Long time no speak everyone!

A belated Happy New Year to you all.

Right, got a bit of a problem. About 6 months ago I managed to get hold of an Electric Blue JD to finish off my collection... Back from work today and I now find out its a she and she's decided to lay a huge batch of eggs!

Now I need to know if my JD who is around 3 years old is a male or not?!

Cheers all in advance!

After some research, I'm 99% sure the fish is a male.

Females have a lot of blue of the gill plates (mine has none).

Females don't have much blue in their bodies (mine has loads).

Females don't have the red edges on their fins (mine does).

Females don't get the hump over the eyes (mine has a slight hump).

So unless anyone can say otherwise, I think I've answered my own question and I have a male JD and a female EBJD...

Lets see if the eggs hatch?!

All the eggs turned white so the male obviously didn't fertilize them. Took the wood out today and cleaned them all off whilst doing a FULL tank clean (4 hours)!

Hopefully my male JD isn't infertile, would love to see if they could produce some little EBJDs! I've got a spare tank waiting just in case!

You got better full body shots of both of them?
I can't tell really... Looks slightly male but also looks slightly female :/ First thing my partner said was female and he works with an adult pair of JD's...

This is the only juvi pic of this JD I have on this computer:

Amazing to see how much it's grown in the 2 years I've had him/her...

The EBJD is obviously female since she's the one that laid all the eggs!

I'll try and get some pics on the DSLR tonight ;)

Thanks, it's just everyone says male and I do think there are points that look male but my partner(who works in an Aquatics Shop that houses a fully grown breeding pair of JD's) says female :/ It's a confusing one XD

I've read that a big give away are the spangles on the gill plates. Mine has very little in comparison to what you'd expect to see on a 3 year old female like this...

Here's a random pic of a large male (notice the lack of spangles on the gill plate, the same as my JD):

Ah well that's the thing, the female my partner works with looks like a male :/ She hasn't got all the blue but she's the one that lays the eggs so we know she's a she. Some female JD's will lay without a male so you could have 2 females, just means you won't get fry.

Hmmmm, so the plot thickens!

We'll see if my JD makes some fry I guess! The sexual parts looks slightly pointy so could be leaning towards and male. Will take a close look later after work.

If you get fry then you have an answer XD

Just got a couple of good ones of my "female" if you want to compare gill plates lol

Yeah go ahead. A picture of the female and a picture of the male would be good :)
