i have been told that any medication containing malachite green or is green itself should be used in a darkened aquarium for the whole treatment or it will not work.please could someone tell me if this is true.and, if it is true then why is something so important not mentioned in the leaflet.

:) thanx for that it was helpful, but still dont know if tank should be kept dark

I didn't do anything special with my aquarium (i.e lights still on 12 hours a day + normal daylight) when I used it and it cleared up the ich a treat within a couple of days - much, much more effective than anything else I tried (tank had tetras/guppies and mollies in it at the time - no apparent side effects) and no 'rebound' outbreaks in the next few weeks...

Never heard of having to keep it dark but I'm a relative novice so that means nothing...

aj xx

:D hi i have sent an e mail to waterlife and they have said that even though the u.v lights on my tank should be switched off, natural light is still okay.
hope this might help anyone else who uses anything with malachite green in it.
my fish still have ich though

I recommend Mardel's coppersafe as the cure-all. Just read the directions and that's it. Just be careful of any meds if you have scaleless fish (ie catfish).

I've been using malachite green and meth blue to cure my betta's ich problem... I didn't darken the tank or anything, kept it with normal light and sometimes with lamp to help heat up the water a bit to speed up the process. It takes a while to clear up (not an overnighter), so a few more days of treatment should do it. I also did 25% water changes every day and 100% water changes every third day.

Hope your babies get all better
