I know this probably ought to go in the planted tanks section, but I put it here 'cause I figured this forum gets more traffic.

Does anyone have any experience using malachite green in a planted tank? *Not* formalin and mg, but just mg. As I mentioned in a previous post, my persistant ich is back for a second round. The tank temperature is up over 85 right now, but this ich infestation seems worse than the last so I'm thinking maybe I'll have to use more than heat. I seem to remember reading, somewhere (if only I could remember where), that someone had used mg in a planted tank and didn't have problems.

Plants in the tank are Java Fern, Java Moss, Hygrophilia polysperma, Amazon Sword, assorted Vals, and some "imitation" Amazon Sword. Fish are Neon Tetras, Corys, Kuhlis, a SAE, Otos, and a Guppy. Tank is 29 gallons.

Thanks

I have persistant ich problems too
The heat seems to be a bigger killer than the malachite with my plants.

I am currently treating with WS3 which contains malachite. TBH i dont think it will wipe out your plants, it hasnt in the past with me or during this current treating process.

Thank you very much :) I did a search on Google for 'malachite green + plants' last night, and from the little bit of reading I did, it seems that the formalin that is often mixed with malachite green is what kills off the plants, at least more so than the malachite green.

I think I will add some malachite green. The Neons have a fair number of spots :sly:

Doesn't malachite green contain copper?

in my experience between koi pond and quarantine tanks and with my tropicals malachite has no effect on plants.it is also o.k to use with shrimps etc and even more beneficial is that it is filter friendly.if you have loaches or other scaless fish just try reducing the dosage slightly.it ,as you say, is the formalin side of the heavier treatment that does all the damage. i think that WS3 is a better option if you can get it as it also contains quinin which is what makes it possibly the best ich destroyer on the market.

i have also tried with sucess a product manufactored by 'KUSURI' called 'Parazoryne'. this is a non chemical plant extract treatmentthat as well as ich treats for costia, gill flukes, skin flukes, oodinium, chilodonella and trichodina.the web address is www.kusuri.co.uk .

good luck with your ich,

john
