Hello everyone things are going great with the tank i`ve now got some calcium plus and i have been putting in a handfull for the past 2 days.

I will do this for 7 days then keep the rest and this should get my ph to around 7 (neutral)

Recently down at the fish store some tests have been done on the product "aquasafe". First a sample of the water is taken and checked for the PH level then another sample from the same tank has been taken and had aquasafe added to the water and another ph test taken. The results were startling as aquasafe LOWERS the PH level and many repeat tests have been taken and still it has the same result.

This proves that aquasafe lowers your ph so if you have an acidic tank already PH 6 - 6.8 DO NOT use the product aquasafe in conjunction with your tap water.

That stuff is temporary and potentially dangerous as it might shock and kill the fish with a sudden pH change. Chemicals are rarely if ever a solution to alterig pH permanently.

I heartily agree with Teelie here - I don't feel it's a good idea to go altering your ph with chemicals. Whenever you do water changes you're going to have to make sure the new water is exactly the same ph before you put it in or it could have potentially disastrous effects on your fish.

Can I ask what your untreated ph normally is? I'm assuming it's toward the acid end as you are adding calcium? Not all fish require a neutral ph so I'm sure you could find some lovely tank residents without all the difficulties of adjusting it.
