I decided to do a photography project for my final honors class. I tossed around ideas with my advisor for awhile before eventually settling on long exposure. I knew from the start I would focus on water as this has and always will be my favorite subject. I intent to do some moving light shots too at some point. I have been wanting to do something like this for awhile but I was just lacking a good reason. I even bought the filters for my camera over a year ago and only started using them in the last few weeks. I will keep updating this thread as I take more shots I like. I'm using a Panasonic FZ-28 with some Hoya neutral density lenses.

I have no idea what all that means but that is absolutely amazing!! I'm in ore of your skill.

These are amazing,

Theres a shop on ebay that blows photos like this into 8ft wall murals, I would deffo buy one of these!

Stunning

Well long exposure refers to a long shutter speed. Instead of snapping a picture and catching a moment a fraction of a second long the camera looks for a much longer time. I have been using 1-10 second exposures. The camera cannot freeze any movement during that time so the appearance is much different. It shows everything it captured over that exposure period. However to use such a long shutter speed you need very low light, which is where the lens filters come in. They act a lot like sunglasses to cut down on light but have no effect on color. Then I start shoot about an hour before sunset so outside light is also low.

Thanks for the explanation. You're certainly very skilled. :)

That is about 280, 30 second exposures stacked on top of each other, we had to go way out into the desert to find a spot with little light pollution.

For everyone wondering, each line is an individual star working its way across the sky as the Earth spins.

One more for you, this was about an hour I think.

love it Mik!

I have wanted to try this for a while, but am yet too. I reckon this has given me the kick i needed. Great photos! :good:

@ Mike, also excellent pics, just remind me of what cam you use?

Beautiful! Do you have any issue with me saving these for use on my desktop?

I have been a very big fan of long exposures, both of the sky and flowing water, for years. I teach these techniques in my nature photography workshops, and time and again they prove to be the most popular learning experiences.

There's some really nice work in this thread.

Mikaila, once you get into the world of DSLRs, you can get a remote shutter release, use the bulb setting, and take some truly long exposures. Some of my Aurora borealis images are 3-5 minute exposures. Here's a long exposure self portrait I did last fall along the North Shore of Lake Superior.

heres some i did when i was 16, for my A levels. unfortunately i think ive lost the photos, the negs, and the files off my pc. this is all i had left from my facebook. done on an SLR and developed by me in a darkroom at college, none of this fancy digital stuff. literally had no idea what i was doing, just guessed the exposures and camera settings, then ran around like a loony with 2 torches in my hands.

I've done the lights before. So far no new stuff, cuz as the song goes April showers bring May flowers  . Hoping for some nice clear days soon. I have a few plans in mind and honestly have no idea how they are gonna turn out, but its the most planning I've put into a photo session before haha.
