I was in the Pet store today and I saw tanks with Bettas in them. The tanks were about 6 inches tall, 8 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches thick. It was sickening !!! Is everyone else here saddened/disgusted/angery, or is it just me.

I hate that bettas are kept in tiny cells too. often with no decor,

Bettas are living fish, they should be kept in an enviroment, not a prison.

If you want something colourful & pretty in a vase, buy a bunch of flowers.

I see them in plastic cups (like the kind you get for a picnic at Wal-Mart) all the time at the 'SuperStore' pet shops and even a few smaller stores, in many cases just sitting on a shelf just like another product.

I don't like bettas being kept in tiny tanks, I never have. I don't care what people say about them originating in rice paddies. It is not the same and the fish are bigger now than they are in the wild from breeding to get bigger fins. Not to mention unstable levels and othe factors that happens in captivity. A batta is not a small fish and they need room to at least move, not only hover.

I would never put a fish in anything less than a 10 gallon, if they don't like moving much, they don't have to but at least they have the choice rather than being shoved in some little jar or cup.

:/

*rant over*

Has anyone tried making a rice paddy biotope for bettas?

Rice is a semi aquatic plant and should grow nicely in a well lit aquaruim.

Now that sounds like an interesting project. Although I'm with cheesey, it would have to be 10 gal at least.

Now to simulate their environment you'd need say a 10 - 30 gal tank, keep it 1/3 full during summer and totally full over winter? or are the paddy fields wetter during the summer? Either way they cant spend 100% of their time living in puddles.

...and you could eat it and save money on food shopping. ;)

That is a stupid argument for someone to use anyways. Last time I checked , rice patties were enormous, hundreds of thousands of gallons of water.
I hate it when fish are sold as the perfect "convenient" pet, that they do not take up much space, and they require little maintenance, and that after a month, they will die of "natural" causes for you to buy more.
People owe it to the animals they buy to take care of them. I think it should be enforced that any one sending their pet to a humane society or what not should pay a substantial fine, and that anyone found abandoning or abusing their pets should have their knee caps shot out. :grr: That'll teach 'em.

How the hell could they turn round in that?! oh wait... i guess they couldn't... :/

I'm glad to say I've never seen bettas in tanks like that here. What all my lfs's do is put one betta in each tank, apart from ones with fin nippers/aggressive fish. theyprobably have 10-15 gallons while in the shop.

Yea, it makes me upset too. It's just that as much as I try to educate the fish buyer ( I work at a pet store) they just don't really care sometimes. And it is hard getting angry at someone when you are suppose to be nice and ask 'did you find everything ok' in a friendly tone.
It's the goldfish that bother me more since they get bigger than a betta. Cummon, a gold fish Bowl? no such thing!

Sorry for hijacking this thread

the place were I bought my plakats has some sad betta things.

well some of the bettas have theyre own tanks with HUGE schools of corry cats. Some are kept in bowls, some are kept in bags then just floating around the tank. But the worst of all was the plakats. They had the smallest net breeders Ive ever seen. Like .75 inch think, They were like guppy fry holders. It was horrible.

I keep my bettas in bowls that vary from about 3/4 of a gallon to a gallon and a half. I do regular water changes and don't overfeed or underfeed them, and they are all pretty happy fish that are very interactive with people and build large bubble nests. I think my bettas are pretty lucky compared to most others that end up with people just looking for an ornament and have no idea of what to do to care for them or simply don't care.
