i just came back from lake san antonio in California. I found a plant on the coast area of the lake with roots in the sand and took it. Is it safe to my fish and other plants to put it in my tank?

No way of us knowing without an ID.
Chances are you wont know without trying. So give it a good wash under tap water, and rid it of any dirt. Trim the roots and plant. Observe and act accordingly.

P.S. Was the whole plant submerged underwater?

yes thats a good idea. but i decided not to do it this time and threw it out. Thanks for the future information. I just wanted to be safe this time.
