I am planning to get a bigger tank in the future, about 10UK Gallons and I'm going to use fish to cycle it. (I can hear you all shouting 'omg do a fishless cycle you noob', but I have been recommended by my LFS (shes very experienced and takes good care of her fish, unlike most LFS'). Also, i'm very impatient and I don't want to add any ammonia or anything, it's either put the filter in my 2.5G tank with my male betta (im not sure thats going to create enough bacteria).
Anyhoo,
I want a hardy fish that is good in communitys and look pretty, but overall are not to expensive and easy to maintain. If I can't find any, would it be ok to use a black moore(s)? I will probably run the new filter in my 2.5, but it probably won't do enough. I plan to get a school of neons (after a few months when the tank has matured), 3 corys and 4 (probably) amano shrimp, and hopefully something else if its possible. I can always put danios in my 2.5G tank if that would be fair and if they are compatiable with my betta. If they can survive in cold water I can put them in my 4G tank, also if my black moores suddenly die I would replace them with danios. I don't mind not having the neons and just using danios instead.

Please could I have your opinions, and while i'm on the topic. Please don't complain about my black moores in my 4G, they are my mams fish and she says they are ok, I can't convince her i'm sorry.
Thanks in advance,
Neal

Danios need to be in groups of 6+ in 20 gallons+ since you lfs is recommending cycling with fish why don't you ask her opinion.

Please get a large plastic storage container for the moors as a temporary home of return them to the shop or get a 20 gallon tank for them. Show your mam the pinned topics in the goldfish section.

I asked her and she said Danios, i'll try and rehome them ASAP and i'm not being stupid but i'd have nowhere for storage containers (we live in a cramped terraced house), trust me I hate it. I bet people have fishtanks bigger than my bedroom! (8ftx7ft) it's attrocious!

I've always known blackmoores to be cold water fish to be honest - I had mine with goldfish for 13 years.

If you've got tanks which are well established and you're going to replace one why don't you put that filter in the new tank along with some of the water and substrate - hey presto, instantly cycled tank!

Alternatively if the new tank is going to be an addition to your collection may I suggest you run the new filter in one of your existing tanks for a few days - you'll have a seeded filter before you know it! - bung a bit of filter media in the new filter too, it all helps!

Good luck (and yes, I did think NOOOO when I saw you wanted to do a fishless cycle). There's no need for you to do one in my opinion.

I'm puzzled as to why you'd even want to think of doing a cylcle with fish, if you already have other tanks to seed the new filter with :S

Ok, so all I have to do is run my filter in my betta tank for about a week?
I wanted to use fish because with it only being 1 betta, i didn't think it would be enough bacteria for about 5 fish.
So it would be ok to use the filter in the 1 fish tank to put in the 5+ tank? If you get what I mean...
