Hi Welcome to the forum! Best place to start loads of advice open to you here and tons of experienced members.

First things first, fishless cycling do you know about it? I would strongly recommend it as it is the easiest way to almost guarantee long term success in fish tanks, if youve not read about it there is a really good article in the beginners resource section. Basically its a process where you add pure ammonia in small doses to the tank while there are no fish present and what this does is replacate the chemical process and building of bacteria in your filter that would happen if you put fish in there straight away. However if you put fish in there straight away the poo created would cause the ammonia and there would be no bacteria to start the chemical process and the fish become exposed to highly toxic chemicals in the tank.

I think the tank would be able to handle a pair of each of the angels, pearls and the rams. Though gourami with angels are a bit hit and miss sometimes it works sometimes it dsnt. Then if you had a decent size school of cories around 8 or 10? and then 1 or 2 bristlenose plecs, though with these are you getting these because they stay small or because you like them? If its because you want a plec that stay small there are quite a lot that would work pretty well in the tank other than the BNs like Inspectors, Chocolate Zebra, Clowns and more.

Hi Wills

thanks for the reply :good: , yes i will be doing a fishless cycle, i have read quite a few articles on it and a few do differ, but i would rather do a fishless cycle then put fish at risk, dont want to be stressing any fish or exposing them to any toxic chemicals if possible. so yes a fishless cycle is what i will be doing.

the list is just an idea of what i like, i do love angelfish and bn plec, but i will look into the others you mention. Just throwing some ideas out there, and get some advice why i am going to be doing the cycle.

I have ordered an api fresh water master test kit. just got to get me ammonia, not 100% sure on the right brand but i have seen this in boots (UK) http://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Household-ammonia-500ml_923908/

i have asked about the ammonia on another thread so just waiting for a reply before i go and buy it.

im sure there will probably be a million questions i got ahead of me, but i am trying to read as much as possible before asking  .

Really nice paragraph there by Wills about the pairs of fish so I'll not have much to add. You are one of the few with probably a good tank for angels.. how high is the height in inches of the tank?

The plain Boots ammonia is one of the best I think. Its always an adventure, the finding of the right ammonia, and we all usually like to hear about each person's experience. I'd guess you're on to the right type.. I think the right boots stuff had a blue cap? We of course can't see your web page of it because it was one of those internal things to the boots web site or something.

The link worked for me.... I had a quick look and yes it is the right type of ammonia. There are not perfumes or anything listed under ingredients so looks fine.

Oh good, Curiosity would be a good judge of it. Mine just shows "US store locator", so must be affected somehow by where you come in from and it just doesn't like me sittin over here in North Carolina, lol. Too bad ya'll can't come for some BBQ tonight, ha~

That's neither funny or fair   lol. Although we did see some sun yesterday...and today... I'm feeling rather light headed about it all!

We've actually had a lot more cold and wet this winter (for us) and have all been smiling a lot today just 'cause its been so long since seeing enough sun. The kids are all rolling out of campus like crazy for the start of spring break. Do you get that at your Uni? My students were not in much evidence tosay, lol. WD

personally i dont like bristlenose plecs....buts thats just me.
rusty pleco's are really nice...as are royal's
i think a royal would look great in your tank.
all the rest are fine fish for that tank
rock shrimps would look good in your tank too...

good luck

I think you mean a wood/bamboo shrimp. And it certainly wouldn't be a good addition. They need specialist feeding, which as a new keeper and in such a big tank would be really tricky.

sorry for not replying to you all, i forgot about this thread as i was busy doing my fishless cycle which im still doing. thank you all for your replys , its given me more of an idea on what to have in the tank but as im still cycling the tank im still looking at what types of fish go well together but wont outgrow the tank.

my tank has not even cycled and im wishing i had a bigger tank already, is this normal

one thing i do want in the tank is MTS (trumpet snails) i have read they are good for a sand substrate, so got to have fish that wont snack on them really.

again thanks for the replys.
