I want to get mbunas, but I'm not sure if they are suitable for my tank conditions. The tank is only 29g. They will have to stay there for 6-8 months before I can upgrade them to a larger tank. If I get small juvenile fish, about 1", would they be alright in such small tank? and how many fish can I get?

IMO 29G is definietely to small for mbuna due to the aggressive and terrotorial nature of the fish.
I am growing on my mbuna juveniles in a 180L tank - they are approx 6 months old and will need rehoming in my main tank (400L) within the next 3-4 months.
I realise it is difficult but you would be better off using the time waiting for your bigger tank researching about the mbuna you like and planning all aspects of their to be new home.
