I have a sudden interest in live plants but I have a gravel bottom. Will live plants work? [/IMG]uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170108/014da8b54e9e8ea5efa5672e5bb69eb8.jpg[/IMG]

The state of your bottom shouldn't really affect how plants grow, so long as you are not growing them in your bottom...

...a man walked into a bar and asked for a double entendre, so the barman gave him one.

Nutrient rich substrates are beneficial but not a necessity, your lighting will be the driving factor in what you can or can't keep. Provided it isn't too intense - you should be able to grow the following without any need for additional lighting or nutrition:

Cryptocorynes
Anubias
Echinodorus
Hygrophila
Microsorum
Aquatic mosses

I've only posted he genus as there are many species - do some googling and see what takes your fancy.
