I have just seen my female Satanoperca Daemon spawning, her behaviour had changed the last couple of days and unlike other cichlids her breeding tube only comes down for minutes as she is laying. I was rooted to the tank watching her laying hundreds of eggs all over the tank floor. I rushed to get my camera and found the batteries are dead. The male has hovered over the eggs and the female is now covering them with sand!!

Yay, congrats Lesley

What is your secret. I'd love to know! Its insane how you get them to breed so easily.

I dont know, I honestly dont know. I dont do anything special honestly. I cannot see any eggs now just a mound of sand, I hope the male did his bit ok.

They bury the eggs don't they? You'll find out in a few days :good:

I wish i could make my jacks spawn as readily as you have yours spawn!

Info on these guys breeding is very limited but yes they bury the eggs, they are classed as mouthbrooders so I assume once the fry hatch the female will hold them, but I dont know I hope I will find out in a few days.

Fingers crossed for you. Gawddd, if these survive let me know when your selling some. I could even swap you for some Geophagus Brasiliensis if your interested in giving them Geos ago ;) Haha

had and bred brazilliensis, they are gorgous. I wouldnt get your hopes too high on these just yet.

Congrats yet again, I'd love to see some pics of the parents with the fry if they arrive without issue

You know, I think the secret must simply be extra special care and attention on your part Lesley. I get the feeling you do big and frequent water changes on your gazillion tanks which takes an awful lot of your time and because you have so many tanks you can swap fish around to get a perfect environment for the love thing to happen

Congrats again as I would be super chuffed if fish like these paired up well, fingers crossed it's a new years gift from your fish to you

Can I ask how you are supposed to go about routinely cleaning the gravel when it contains eggs?

Kaivalagi: All my tanks get weekly wc on the same day only on rare occasions it may be the day after or the day before. All my spawnings seem to occur on wc day. The Daemons get 2 small changes in the week and a larger change on a Friday when all the decor is taken out and cleaned, hence spawning on a Friday. The female is now fanning the little mound I have seen her fanning before and it was so vigorous that she swept all the sand away, this time its much more gentle. Batteries are on charge still, I will get pics if anything happens.

Mark4785: Very carefully and avoid the area containing the eggs completely, but I will cross that bridge when I come to it.

Walkers: Calm down buddy, they have to blooming hatch yet

 The little mound of sand has gone, neither fish are paying any attention to the site, both are "lip slapping" at each other and eating so the eggs are not being held in their mouth. Oh well maybe next time.

Gutted Lesley, fingers crossed for next time aye!
