I have a JBL CO2 system to try and provide an optimum plant growing environment. It came with a 'Permanent CO2 indicator'.

The indicator is a plastic unit that comes apart to two sections. The top clear half has 5ml of tank water and three drops of a reagent added. Then the black plastic bottom half is pushed back on and the whole is put in the tank with the liquid at the bottom and clear top above.

The liquid shows up against a white plastic band inside and the colour shows the CO2 content/Ph.

I dont get it. How does a *sealed* small quantity of water show the CO2 of the tank over time? I can see that the colour inside reflects the Co2 of the water inside the unit at the time the sample was added, but not how it can possibly change if the tanks Co2 changes.

Can anyone explain this?

Yours,
Confused.
