Java Fern

So i dont know whats wrong but whenever i attached my java fern into the driftwood, some leaves would stat dying but whenever i put it in the substrate, it starts growing a looking okay. So my question is what am I doing wrong?

if the leaves are dieng just cut them off and let the plant establish itself on the bogwood, it will soon start growing new ones
