Is it necessary to attach java fern to driftwood or some other heavy piece or can I just bury the roots in the sand? I got several bunches in different places, and now I'm even getting little "fernlets" growing off some of the leaves that have their own root system. What should I do with these? Any help is appreciated.

The rhizome needs to be exposed, so don't plant them in the substrate. Try to find a way to attach them to wood or rock, I use a brown cotton.

you can bury it in sand long if the knobbly bit (cants remember what its called) is above the sand surface i think

i use super glue for mine

Always best to tie it to something really as the roots are constantly looking for something to attach themselves too.
