I have a 29 gallon tank that im currently cycyling (fishless).. I was wondering how well java fern would grow in my tank.... Its got a sand substrate and the light bulb is a 17 watt bulb..

Java ferns are a very hardy species. They would thrive at low levels of CO2, light, or other nutrients. If you're getting other plant species, I would suggest getting a fluorescent light with 55+ Watts.

My only concern is that you should not plant the java ferns on the sand since their roots must always be exposed to water. Therefore, I suggest to try attaching them to driftwoods or rocks. What you can do is get some thread and try to tie them and hopefully they will regenerate.

Good luck!

Alright.. What about java moss? Getting a florescent light 55+ watts would I need a whole new light?

Just use a bit of cotton wool/fishing wire to attach the java fern to any decorations/bog wood. Looks excellent.
