Fish Fanatic
Hi everyone,
I'm currently experiencing issues with my hospital tank. Its a 10 litre tank, its fully cycled and currently houses a single black molly who's been in there for about 8 weeks. I got the hospital tank when he showed signs of illness, but through lots of digging, trial and error, and taking him round to loads of shops, I've discovered he's actually allergic to something in my main tank! So he's had to stay in the hospital until I can set up my new 70 litre tank which i've just bought as a 2nd tank. He was doing very well, that is, until 2 days ago I had to put a 6.5 inch plec into his tank. This plec is going to be rehomed as soon as possible and its only there because I rescued it as the person I bought some fish accessories from said he was going to FLUSH HIM DOWN THE TOILET unless I fancied taking him off his hands! So obviously, I had to save his little life!
The issue is that Mr plec can't go into my main tank as I already have a much smaller plec who I don't want to upset and the large plec is VERY hard to catch. He's super fast, so keeping in the hospital is a must really.
The water parameters have shot up in the last 2 days since his arrival and I've noticed he's producing a lot of waste that my poor little tank is struggling with!
I'm currently using Prime to detoxify the ammonia, which is reading at 1.5mg/l and am doing daily 50% changes. The rest of the parameters are - pH - 6.8, KH - 10, GH - 12, NO2 - 0, NO3- 5.
The tank has some gravel from my main tank to help with bacteria, a heater, Fluval sponge filter and an air pump to aid oxygen levels.
I've heard that using Prime is good for converting ammonia into NH4 so it's not toxic, but it still shows up on ammonia testing kits as toxic because the test can't distinguish between NH3 and NH4? Is this correct?
Also, in the 2 days that the large plec has been here, he's not touched any food I've offered. He's been offered sinking pellets, cooked courgette and algae wafers and he's touched nothing I've tried to contact the man who owned him to ask what he's been feeding him but he's not responding. Has anyone got any suggestions?
The catfish will be going as soon as I can find him a new home and if anyone could give me any tips or advice, I'd really appreciate it!
