Hiya everyone, just want to ask a question my LFS told me that whenever I feed my fish I have to switch off my filter so that no food can go inside the filter,is this right??

Cheers

Never heard that one before, I know you can use food to show ammonia in your water, so therefore I would imagine an established tank should have the bacteria to break it down should it get to the filter (my fish would rather swim up the filter than see food go to waste LOL), remember a lot of the advice you get from the LFS is pure b******s. :

Never heard that one. The fish should eat most of it anyway and if food does get in there, isnt that why they call it a filter??
Thats nonsense whoever told you that.

there are some filters that it is an advantage to turn off during feeding,
especially those that draw water from the surface.

personally I can't see it as a problem as long as you remember to turn it back on when the food is gone

i wouldnt bother turning your filter off.
i turn mine off, only to feed my tropical butterflty fish, which only eats food on the surfuace, and the spray bar pushes the food to the bottom, so it cant eat. so unless you have a tropical butterfly fish, i wouldnt bother. also regularly turniong your filter on and off, can be damaging, messing up your impellor.

Also if you leave your filter off for too long it can kill the friendly filter bacteria which require flow to survive.
