Is This Cruel?

Its awful in my opinion.

Bettas like it warm - where would a heater go?

Betta could easily jump out.

Most people on here would say it probably has enough space for a betta, but I personally feel that what most people on this site keep them in is cruel....

I can't find that they've put up any info about the size, nor about how you keep it clean. It does not seem to contain any filter, so you would need to do very frequent water changes, assuming that it was big enough- probably very awkward. And what about heating? I'd be wary of this one.

No way would i keep a betta in that my local lfs used to sell them and they are so small it would be cruel.

its those "beta boxes" that get me, the things are like 10cm x 8 cmx 8 cm, if the fish flaires it`s fins hot the sides of the box. they could be cool for display purposes but not for a permanent home surely?

Less than a gallon!! No way for a betta, and as others have said, where would a heater go?

Maybe some snails or ghost shrimp though?

:X I hate those things. Be like being forced to live in a wardrobe for us. No matter who 'pretty' it may be, it'd still be cramped and nasty for the occupant. I wouln't use for anything but a mechanical fish. And that'd probably break it after hitting the sides too many times.
Hugs,
P.

Yes. Not to mention it could easily jump, no room for heater.

well, as long as your house is around 70 F the betta will be fine. i think betta can live in there pretty comfortably in something under a gallon. look at the containers i keep my betta in. this container is better than those 1 gallon glass bowls that have a 2 flat sections you can buy at the lfs.

on the sticker of the container it says it holds 40oz. thats only like .31 gallons

It seems to me to be another gimmick intended to appeal to the fishkeeper rather than consider the comfort and well-being of its inhabitant(s). If you want wall decorations, buy a suitable picture; if you want to keep fish, opt for a fishtank, and not a compromise of both.

Well dorkhedeos, I consider your housing for your bettas to be extremely cruel.

Why does everybody treat bettas like they belong in a box?

When I had my betta he was housed in a minimum 8 gallon tank! Anything less (like many do) would just have been cruel in my opinion.

I don't get some of you.... no wonder I dont go in the betta forum. it annoys me how people treat these fish, while claiming to love them so much.

Ive seen some betta tanks at my LFS's which couldnt be bigger than about half a litre, to 3/4 Litre.

Ever seen those betta balls?

All the bettas i have seen for sale around here were in tanks smaller than 1 litre, and none of them seem to swim around. Just float there.

I think you guys are being too critical. The specs say that the container holds 3 liters. A gallon is about 3.8 liters, which is the generally agreed upon minimum for one betta, so it's not as far off as some of you are making it out to be. Also, look at the dimensions. It's 35 cm long which is a little over a foot long and 13.5 deep with is just under 6 inches. This seems like adequate swimming space to me. Concerning the fish jumping out and the fact that there is no heater, as long as you keep it in a well heated room and cover the hole with something, it's actually not that bad.

Also, I think the way Dorkhedeos keeps his bettas is fine. From the side view, it might look like the betta is very cramped but from the top view, you can see that it has a decent amount of swimming space.

And for the record, I keep my betta in a 10 gallon, simply because it cost the same as a 5.5 gallon and I figured I might as well get it.
