I have a choice to make... I have my 200 litre community tank building up stock nicely now and I love it. I have the chance to get a second tank, do I do the sensible things at get a 4ft tank that I have seen (approx 430 litres) or do I go insane and get the 6ft (approx 700 litre) monster and use it as a dividing wall between my office and lounge space?. Only problem with the BIG tank is that I would need to change my sofa to fit in where I'd want it, is that taking this hobby a bit too seriously!. Is it worth the major upheaval to basically have a stunning wall of fish, or is there a point where the sensible head should be put on?.

If you're ready for the large water changes and moving stuff about a bit, I'd say go for the 6ft! :good:

I have a pump that takes my water change water straight from the tank (through a mesh so no fish can get caught) out into a 400 litre water butt in the garden which I then use to water my garden and the veg and plants love it, that way I am not having to juggle buckets or containers everywhere inside. I also have a tap in the garage which I use to fill food grade containers before treating the water and pumping it back to the tank, it has meant that water changes can be done very quickly and cleanly and I get to use the old water. Being on a water meter I want to get as much use out of my supply as possible and it means I can water my garden if there is a hose pipe ban in the summer, so a win all around. I reccomend that anyone with a garden get a water butt and use their old tank water this way, it keeps your overall household running costs down.

Well I have gone and done it and ordered a 6ft x 2ft x 2ft tank, it will have to live in the garage until I get the new furniture so it will fit where I want it. Going to be a major project getting it just right, so will take some time, but I will update with pictures as and when it starts getting put together. I never realised quite how addictive this hobby was until I started.

Good decision and furniture is overated anyway. I am now down to one sofa in the house and no chairs so that I could make room for the 150g.. we never really used the chairs anyway.
The bigger tank gives you so many more options as well as being easier to manage in my opinion. Water changes are a doddle.. it's just if it's planted, the 2ft height on top of stand height means I always get soaked when replanting or what have you...

Just trying to decide on a 'look' for the tank, my current tank has a homemade slate cave and a big piece of bogwood. I want to find an oriental feel theme to this tank, not decided yet if I am going for another community tank with larger specimens which wouldn't like a 200 litre home, or whether to go down the cichlid route.

I'd go for some cichlids and catfish, mabye an eel too (if you find a compatible one).

I do like the fire eels and weather loaches, I know the weather loaches can reach nearly a foot in length. There are so many fish that get too large for my original tank, but would be happy in the new one. I have plenty of time to decide as it will take a while to get it all set up in place as there is a lot of work to be done first

NEVER EVER EVER post a topic like this on here we're all daft and always want big tanks so your probably getting biased replies haha all jokes aside though I'd go big cos I'm one of the nutters but if you dont think it's worth all the hard work stick to the smaller one.

i know u r going for 6 footer.. a nice community show tank should not get bigger then that. and not smaller then 5 foot.

PLUS... 6 by 2 is perfact size for many beautiful fish.

regarding water change.. get a storege box size of 150l or more and pond pump and hose pipes..

First... fill the box, add stuff, run a pund pump..
Second... take out 150l from your tank to bathroom via long hose pipe.
Third... pump the prepared water from box to tank via pond pump and hose pipe.

it takes me 15 min, max.

Good Luck

I wouldn't hesitate......the 6ft.
Can you imagine the stocking options you would have....

I have a friend designing the cabinet as I write this, as it is going to be a room partition, I want to hide ALL the workings away and they will have to enter from one end or above, as I can't have them obstructing the main view as it is to be admired from both sides. Thinking about having it all the way up to the ceiling so it looks like it is built into a wall.
