i am wanting to move mt bt master socket from the lounge up into our bedroom or through into the dining room.

we have a bt socket but our bills are through orange so bt told me to ring them. orange want £105 for initial call out and £55 every hour after for as long as it takes

i dont want extension cables running all over the house as they look untidy and with 2 kids in sure they wont last long and will soon be pulled out and damaged.

so is there a way of doing it other than going through the very expensive route of orange?

I aint no telecoms engineer, but could you not get yourself, im guessing it is, a large ethernet cable with a splitter on the end. then run this under the edge of your carpet.

If your wanting it upstairs then i would just lift your carpet and one floorboard where the corner is, simply drill a hole or put a screwdriver. through and run the cable through the hole and attach the splitter on the end.

the second way may seem a carry on but like you said, the price is extortion and in the end probably cause more damage actually getting it moved.

thats what i have ended up doing in my house, there are a couple of ethernet cables running around from outside, through the main wall, under carpets and through 3 of the 4 bedrooms, so its like a little spiders web but they are all easy to access and change about.

If your interested in doing that then i would try and judge where your putting the cable from and too, get a rough idea of length and look for something like THIS HERE

hopefully that gives you some help :D and good luck

Does the cable come in at high level off of a telegraph pole or under ground?

Ok. If there is an external box, all you should need is enough cable (from B and Q) to reach where you require the new phone point.
Open up the box on the outside of the house remove the existing conection and connect your new cable. Run it around the outside of your house to where you want it, drill through the wall and fit your old internal box in the new position. :good:

There are only a couple of wires used in the phone cable so major worries.

thanks ill look into it.

i always thought that the wiring would be a complete nightmare

I am a telecoms engineer dude, problem is BT use a tool called a crone tool which pushes the wire into the terminal on the back of the socket, but there are also screw terminals in most sockets too, problem is on the back of the socket if your intending to use the one in its original spot and the new one as well then terminals 2 and 5 are the ones to connect from and then run to the new socket on the same terminals. Pain really but to crone in the cables you can use a tiny flat blade screwdriver. Dude pm me your number and i'll text ya or something and if you have problems you can just give me a buzz. Also your best off buying cheap 4 core alarm cable as solid core BT cable snaps once bended a few times and 4 core alarm cable is cheaper, if you were in kent I'd give ya a reel of it and the crone tool lol.

thanks for the info mate.

ive actually found a guy locally that will move it for about £55 so i think ill go with that as i dont want to mess it all up

the socket just needs moving i wont need 2 sockets as all the other phones in the house run from the mains electricity and just the first handset needs a line socket.

if i do decide to go for it alone ill defo take you up on the phone call though :good: cheers

Ahh man its even easier then, save the money and diy. :good:
