I havent used my fiilter for a while and filled my tank about a third of the way (its about 18inches high) and tried out my filter

its an eheim 2236. im using the old media just to test it (i have bought some new media online its on its way)

but the motor bit is making a noise and its not working.

is this because the water needs to be full to near the top of the tank so more is raised in the hose etc?

or is it just broken and i should cancel the new media coming and buy a new filter?

If its a hang on back filter try priming it by filling the filter up with some water. Also make sure the opening at the bottom of the pipe is all the way under water. (you may want to add some more water to your tank too) The sound may just be the motor running dry.

if its making a noise then it still works. The impellor shaft could be broken. The O ring could be damaged as well. Try placing the return hose in a bucket and let water flow thru the filter. Once it is flowing well turn the pump on for a moment and see if the flow increases. If it does then turn the pump off and put the return hose in the tank. Now turn the pump on and see what happens.

Also make sure the filter canister is fully primed (full of water) It is still working. Turn it off, shut off valves if present. Take the motor housing off the canister, turn it over and you should see a locking bar, twist this and it will come away, now lift the little circular type impellier cover off. Lift out the impellier unit along with the ceramic shaft and rubber bushes. Check that the impellier blades are intact and the shaft is not broken and make sure you have a rubber bush at each end of the shaft. If so then every thing is fine just give everything a quick clean and re assemble.
Fill your tank up and make sure everything is primed correctly, switch on and give it a few minutes to clear the air from the system, then it should run quite smooth and reasonably quiet.
Although nothing to do with your predicament I would order a couple of canister sealing rings. They are very handy to have in.

As said the ecco 2236 is not self priming and so if its not full of water then it will run 'dry' causing the motor to be much louder than if water was passing by it.
