Hi, you are fish in cycling so be prepared for large water changes. Test your water a couple of times a day and change as much water as necessary in order to keep both ammonia and nitrite below zero. If you can get some mature filter media from somewhere then this will speed up the process of cycling your filter.

I was doing large water changes for about a week. Then the guy at the LFS said I shouldn't change that much because the chlorine in the tap water I added back in would kill any good bacteria.

So I'm puzzled :/

Treating the water kills the chlorine, which allows bacteria to grow.

You will need to treat the water before you change it with a dechlorinator.
 
Thanks, I found that out like a week ago and have been doing so since I found out.
 
The pet store told me nothing, lucky there is the internet!!!
