I just bought a female Black Molly yesterday (My very first Molly!) from Pet smart. She is very fat, and I was reading about Molly's and looking up the pictures of pregnant ones. The articles that I read mentioned "squaring off" and to me, she looks more square than my male Molly. Im not sure if the body shape is just different because of the gender difference or if she is pregnant. I took some pictures, and will upload those onto here (sorry the quality is not too good, she is very active and I only have a cell phone camera). So if anyone could take a look and let me know what you think so that if she is I can make the preparations for the birth of the Fry. Thank you!!!

She is hanging out by the heater, and the male Dalmation Molly will not leave her alone! He is chasing her around and like pecking at her belly? She has that white spot by her anal fin too.

She is pregnant, I would say she is less than a week away from a drop, the male dalmation will mate with her after she drops

About how long should I wait to put her in the breeding trap? I dont want the babies to get eaten. I am going out to buy more plants today to try and make a good hiding area for the fry if they would be dropped before I could her her into the trap. Thank you!!

I don't recommend putting the molly in a breeding trap especially if you are new to livebearers and fish keeping. The reason is if you put the fish in to soon the mother can either abort the pregnancy, give birth prematurely to un developed fry, also the worst thing being the fish will die from the stress of a small container.

So what I recommend is you let her give birth in the main tank and then you catch the fry in a small net and put them in the floating fry trap

Ok thank you, I dont want her to be stressed out. She is happily swimming by the heater eating a shrimp pellet. I guess now it is just a waiting game! If I have any fry that I catch, I will post pictures! Thank you again!

Your pictures.

My own impression is that the female in the pictures might possibly be carrying fry but is nowhere close to a drop.
