Is it possible to modify an internal filter?

Hi,
I have a powerful internal filter I do not use and wondered if anyone has replaced sponge filter media with the different layers of media used in external filters ?
Is it possible to modify an internal filter so that it can act like an external placed in the tank?Is it a silly question?
