Looks like riverbed pebbels basically. I could post a picture if needed.
After reading on here I'm concerned about leaching something into the substrate. I bought it at my LFS but I figured I'd check to be sure.

If you bought it at your lfs, chances are it is safe. Wash it well (no soap though) before using in your tank.

I agree it looks safe, and it should be safe if you bought it at a fish store. If you wanted to be darn sure, you could always do the vinegar test. Put some vinegar on it, and if it fizzes, it's not safe.

I think it would be safe. It looks cool. Was it expensive?
bought it a while back. Can't remember exactly. I think maybe 25-30 bux for 50 lbs

The vinegar test only tells you if it will raise your pH not if it is safe however it is probably safe and probably coated in epoxy (a good thing) why not try on a mean fish in a different tank first just to be safe.
