i have a whole background made of fiberglass (according to the seller) and i haven't had any problems with the water chemistry...

traditional fibre glass? or more modern glass reinforced plastic?

There is a difference. If its the latter (which is probably what the background is made from) it should be fine, as its (usually) non-toxic, inert, sealed and pretty much kid proof!

Traditional fibre glass on the other hand can be very dangerous, can give off fibres and particles if broken and can make you itch.
