as you might know, my first try at a divided tank didnt go so well and one of my bettas had to be moved into what was GOING to be my fry tank! I really need that space for my fry and I am going to try again. my final conclusion of how one betta was getting to the other's half(both males by the way) was by jumping. to fix this, I put a strip of plastic(about 3 in wide) over the top of the divider. I've been testing this out with only one betta in the tank and he has not gotten over yet. If all goes well in the next couple days, I want to add my other betta as soon as possible. How do you think I should do this? will my one betta be more motivated to get to the other side if there is actually another fish in there? should I  block the divider with plants or something?

any help is appreciated!

I always advise placing things next to the divider like plants which block the view.  This does not mean that they will not see each other but it does limit them having to see the other fish all the time which lessens the stress.  Make sure your dividers are securely attached at all points so that they can not push by the divider or go underneath it.  Also make sure each betta has a cave or something of that nature to call his own so he can "get away" when he wants too.  This is another way to lessen the stress of living in a divided tank if you have boys that tend to have issues living next to another male.  There is a possibility that the current one will show more interest in trying to get to the other side once another fish is added but since that particular fish has not had the ability to "claim" the whole tank as his territory so he should be more able to tolerate a tank mate on the other side of a divider.

Use a solid colour divider so they cannot see each other.
