Hello,

Today when I placed my betta, Cas, in a fish bowl while cleaning his tank, I noticed that there was a small red-ish spot on his left gill cap (and seeing as how he's mostly blue, this is abnormal) that I've never seen before. It's slightly raised and about the size of a single scale. I'm wondering, did I accidentally hurt him somehow when I caught him in the net to transfer him between tank and bowl? Did he hurt himself on one of his tank decorations? Or is this something else I should worry about, like a growth or parasite?

He's swimming around normally, and his breathing doesn't seem to be labored yet, but I'd rather be safe than sorry and if this is something I should be concerned about I'd like to take care of it early on.

Here's the best picture I could take: photo.JPG It's the red space down and right from his eye.

It may just be a scratch. What is the tanks temperature? How long has it been running? Also are his decorations sharp anywhere?

Edit: Make sure you keep his water really clean to prevent an infection.

So far it doesn't look like anything too bothersome.  It could be a small injury and really all you would really need to do is keep the water warm and very clean to keep it from being infected and to help it heal.  The other thing it might be is him changing color.  Seeing as he is a blue with red wash, having red start showing up in other places on his body besides his anal fin is something to be expected.
