Okay so I just started thinking... is it even possible? I love those severums and the geophagus cichlids. I have been thinking that I just need to wait until I can get a bigger tank. The bigger tank is a possibility but not for a year or more. But then I thought, you are all so creative that maybe there is some way I could shift things around.

What I have:

60 gallon (24 tall, 12 wide, 48 long) with two breeding angels, 7 congo tetra, pair of apisto caratuoides, pair of bolivian rams, 4 albino corys, and a bn

30 gallon (18 tall, 12 wide, 30 long - maybe 36 long I forgot) with 2 angels (not a pair), 9 neon tetra, 2 otos (i know the neons are not safe but angels small at the moment and I know the otos should be in a bigger group... this tank is ready for a bit of work).

I also have a 10 gallon with 3 danios planning for pygmy corys and red shrimp.

Any thoughts on moving things around? Or other creative ideas?

Thank you.

Hi the 60 gallon is the only tank for Severums and Geophagus, though admitedly you would be better of with Biotodoma or Guianacara rather than true Geophagus and with the Severums you need to stay away from Heros Efacticious - common Green Severums and Gold/Super Red - because they get too big but a lone Rotkiel or true Heros Severus would work in that tank :)

So that said I would move the apistos to the 30g and then either get 2 more Bolivian Rams (aka MikroGeophagus) Or rehome those rams and get a group of Biotodoma or Guianacaras. Then add the Rotkiel Sev to that tank :) I would also up the cories to 6 or so ;)

Should work pretty nice :)

Ah, just one of the "creative experts" I was hoping for. Thanks Wills.

So let me ask a few other questions. I was looking at the retail list of a supplier/breeder and it says Heros Severus "Gold", "Red Spot" and "Green". These more likely the Heros Efacticious, correct? Just want to verify. Of course it is that darn Red spot that I am smitten with. And are you saying that the "true" Heros Severus is a Rotkeil? Or are these two different subspecies. The supplier/breeder does have the wild biotodoma and the guianacara. What are the behavioral differences between these? Which would you choose and why? And how big is a group....five?

So.....

2 angels, 1 heros severus, 7 congo tetra, a group of the biotodoma/guianacara, 6 cories, and a bn would be okay in the 60 gallon?

Okay other "creative experts" keep the ideas coming. This is all your fault anyhow!!!

Heros Severus is one type and Heros Severus sp. Rotkeil or just Rotkeil (sometimes also called red shouldered severum) is another.

Wills is good . Only thing I think a green severum or gold would be fine because mine if 7" and is a year. Yes he is still slowly growing but not fast. So I think she has time to get a green severum or red since she is thinking of getting a 150gal right ;) .

Severums are great and so much fun to watch grow. I got mine at pet supermart when he was 1" and he had ich but now look at him.

Hummm snowflake, I love how certain you are that I will get a bigger tank.  I think I'm just following this road travel before by all of you. How long have you had your sev Snowflake? How long til you get an oscar? :hyper:

So the red spot would need a 150 gallon eventually? That bit? Because, I've read they get to 12 inches. Geez, don't know if a 150 gallon would fit anywhere.

I'm sort of excited about switching things up to get a severum and some cupid cichlids.

Okay now I'm going to get it for being a shallow person, which are more colorful, Rotkeil or the true heros severus?
And there is some talk in these forums about the pair of rams or the apistos being able to fit in a 10 gallon. I do have room for one of the pairs in my 30 gallon and the other pair I could rehome or put in a 10 gallon. Thoughts on that? As I do have a 10 gallon up and cycled and waiting for some thought as to stocking.
Are corys (albino) okay with Severum and cupid or guianacara cichilds.

Thanks for all the help!

My Green severum is a year and a few months old. He 7" I read 12" too. I think it will take a long time for them to get that big. I think some will max out at 8". Jans tropics had a big old Gold severum in that was 9-10" and Thick.

A 150 would be fine for a severum or 2. I personaly love my Green and think he is better looking then my red spot. BUT my husband likes the Red spot severum more because he is so bright. The Rots are nice they are like Greens but with more color.

Cory cats are normaly fine with severums. I think one pair of rams or one pair of apistos could work in a 10 gal.

on a side note we found a house that has a perfect space for a fish room hahaha.

Usually a 75g is minimum for a common severum, but if you could get a 4x2x2 120g tank that would be great for these kind of tanks :)

Of Rotkiel and Severus probs Rotkiels are going to be the more colourful. But be careful with the Rotkiels as there are two species that get the red collar - I forget the scientific name but I think it is Heros Apendicus aka the orange neck these are generally paler and as the name says have an orange neck where as the rotkiels are darker on the body and a strong red on the neck. Though the rotkiels are brighter in colour a good condition Heros Severus is really nice as well - the true Heros Severus get rows of red spots down the sides on a sandy/beige body colour.

I would do

1 Heros sp.Rotkiel
2 Angels (pair)
4 Cupid Cichclids
7 Congo Tetras
6 Albino Corys
1 BN

Looks like a good stocking to me :D

if u get a rotkeil u could add it without changing anything. 2 apistos + 2 rams is pretty much the same as 4 rams. i wouldnt keep rams in a 10g tank but it does depend on dimensions rather than volume more, eg. a 24x12x16 (lwh) tank half full (essentially 24x12x8) would be sufficient

i agree with increasing corydoras to 6 minimum as suggested above
