Hi,

i've got one of those tanks which has a 3 stage Filtration System....the filter cartridges sit on top of the water. A tube goes into the water, sucks the water up, goes through the cartridges and then the water goes back into the tank...the point is that the cartridges have carbon sealed inside and cannot be taken out..so i was wondering if i should just throw the cartridges into the tank and use the new internal fish filter i just bought which doesnt contain carbon?

Cheers!...thanx for the help in advance?

Need to get the carbon out of the tank, as it will be useless adding a med, as the carbon is for removing meds from tanks, good luck.

Hi Wilder,

if i take out the 2 cartridges i'm using at the moment then my bacteria will die, which means i'm going to have to take a chance and add the treatment. I've orderd an internal filter which comes tomorrow and does not contain any carbon, but the thing is that i can't just change the filters over because the new filter will not have any bacterial growth. I think my best bet is to stick the 2 cartridges in the corner of the tank to hopefully minamize the amount of meds taken out. What do you think?

Thanx for the reply! :)

So there is no pad or something of that sort for the bacteria to grow on (or if there is it is in with the carbon).

If that is the case:
a) That is an absurd design, since carbon needs to be taken out when using meds
B) results in being forced to change the cartridges when there is too much detritus in the media, making it expensive

Nherefore, you are definitely better off with the new filter coming in.

As for the bacteria... would it be possible for you to purchase filter floss and somehow insert it somewhere in the old filter? If not, perhaps rubber band it near where the water is pushed out of the filter so bacteria can populate it? The bacteria colony should not take a long time to populate the new media, and you can move this media over to the new filter.

As for putting the cartridge in the tank, this will almost entirely negate the use of medication, and, therefore, make it worhtless.

Increasing the temperature and doing large-scale water changes is also an option...
