I *think* I have a pregnant swordtail...

I've had my aquarium for atleast 4 years now and never once have any of my fish become pregnant! Anywy, I looked in the tank the day before yesterday and noticed that one of my females was VERY round and it looks like she has little orange things inside her. Is this a sign that she's pregnant? Any help would be very much appreciated! Incase she is I already bought another small tank for her to live for a while until she has her babies, was this the right thing to do?

That was a wondeful move on your part.

If the fish is pregnant, you might be able to see a gravid spot near the vent. If it is big, she is probably pregnant. If you can see eyes, she is about to drop.

You said you noticed that she was big this morning. Was it overnight, or had you not noticed it before?

If it was overnight, it might be dropsy...

She's been hiding alot so I haven't really got a good look at her for a while, she was out this morning though ready for breakfast. That's when I noticed she was pretty big...

If you can get another good look at her there should be a darker triangle shaped area just behind the stomach. The second grow out tank is a good idea if she is pregnant and a good idea if she is ill. The thing to remember is that if you put her in there and she births a short time after she is done birthing she is going to start snacking on those fry so get her back in the main tank as soon as you can.
