Well this is my first post. So here it goes. I have a planted US 50 gal tank with 130 watts of power compact fluorescents. No co2 hence I know my mistake. I am about to order my co2 injection equipment. So I am going to start my CO2 as soon as I get the stuff. Obviously I have a huge algae problem. First question what is a good diffuser. Next what I need is a help on how much CO2 to start with as not to change everything too suddenly. Thirdly what would be some good plants to out compete the algae? Right now I have some type of grass looking stuff that grows to be at least 30" long nice and straight not the curly stuff. And a few dwarf sword plants.
The tank has a heavy fish population. 2 angles, 6-8 corys, 3-4 upside down catfish, 1 bushy nosed plecto, 4 tetra type fish, 1 larger tetra type fish (I can't remember the name for the life of me but it likes to eat algae). I think that is about it. Oh and two small algae eater can't recall but just over an inch long. Filtration is from a fluval 304 I believe might be 204 I am at work sorry. Oh yeah no fertilization right now because that just seemed to help the algae (now I know I need co2)
Sorry to drag on but trying to give as much info as possible. Any suggestions on plants to get it back in shape would be great. I had lost hope in this tank but after researching on this site I have regained hope. I will hopefully be started CO2 next week I will try to keep you guys posted on the results. When I start my co2 what kind of fertilization should I start I have my trace elements and a liquid fertilizer. Any suggestions on some specific substrate fertilizers? Keep in mind I haven’t fertilized in at least a year.
Thanks in advance for any help offered,
Dominic
P.S. I will try to get some pics up in the morning
