Hi I'm 16 and just got into a new hobby of swordtails. I got one painted(male) and one pineapple(female). I think I got a pregnat pineapple but I'm not sure how to tell my cuzz told me that if she was pregnat then there would be a black dot by her tail. Well i was looking the best I could and I saw several little black dots she is kinda fat looking and I thought I saw fry in her belly area but then my cuzz said they are down by the tail not the belly. Can someone tell me if she is or not I will put pictures up shortly. If she is not pregnat can my painted mate with my pineapple or do they stay to there own kind?

Lost and confussed looking for anwsers  :/

i have never kept swordtails , but im fairly sure your painted can mate with your pineapple - i dont see why not. as for whether your female is pregnant - you shouldnt see a black "dot" so per se. its just a darker area. and if she is fat then yeah , shes probably pregnant , though pictures would help.

also get another 2 females to keep the male happy and the female alive breeding comes really quickly with live bearers and youll soon be sick of finding fry in your tank :hyper: :good:

Hi,

Cheers for the PM and Welcome :) :) :)

I have some Swordtails too, and the famale has been pregnant twice now!!! I'm still learning and thing everyone still is all the time, but from my knowledge and what I have seen when my Female has been Pregnant, she started with a Dark spot ( Gravid spot ) and then when she was very close I was able to see a Few smalls dark spots (which some people say can be classed as the Frys (baby fish) eyes!!!)

So she may well be close and you may soon have little Fry swimming around!!!

Have you only got two fish???

Have you a breeding net or trap???

Smurfy is right, the male WILL need other females or he will bug the Female and this could cause stress and even cause her to die ( not saying she deff will die, but is has been known )

:p :p :p

Keep me updated PM me anytime :) :) :)

Yeah, more females would be a good idea. If you see little black dots, then she may be close to dropping fry (though as mentioned by others, a picture would help). Keep an eye on her and let us know. I'll check back to see if you get a picture up.

I just purchased swordtails, but I think they are pretty much the same for all live bearing fish and my guppies usually start out with a dark gravid spot but as they get closer to birth it breaks up into several smaller dots (as mentioned in hot hazza3's post about swordtails).

Good luck!

Thankx everyone for your advice I will have pictures up by tonight. I will doubble check my fish for a gravid spot. Is the anal fin also know as the tail

nope , the tail is - well the tail at the back of the fish. the anal fin is right in front of where your fish does its poop

edit - it is pointed in males and shorter and curved in females

Do i need to put the fry into a seprate tank or just let them hide out in the plantds

depends what u prefer.if u leave them they will probably be eaten, maybe a few will survive if any. i put them in a seperate 5 gallon so they can all live and grow. its just preference :)

I've had only guppy fry (and 3 at that). I left them in the main tank in a breeder net for a few days, but they're very messy :p currently at only 9 days old, I'm keeping them in my only available tank (a half gallon betta tank (betta-less!)... horrible, I know) but it's bigger than the breeder, and easier to clean. I've read in countless places that fry will swim to the top of the aquarium and hide in floating plants, but my fry will do no such thing! They own the place, and swim wherever they want xD

Personally I think seperating them is better, but leaving them to fend for themselves would be just fine, if you want population control. At least then, the ones that survive will most likely be the strongest.

Good luck with breeding them :D

it depends on how many you want to keep , a new tank if you want to keep as many as possible , but provided you have some cover _ a couple should survive

Yeah, I agree.

I have a small Fry tank ( 5 Gallon ) which is just about the right size for them to grow and get stronger.
But I have also left them in the main tank to but none did survive and I was gutted so thats when i got the Fry tank.

Well i have a 1/2 gallon goldfish tank(empty) will that work it wouldnt have a filter though

1/2 gallon is kind of small, but if you only have a couple of fry, it might do for a while . . . can you set up a sponge filter for them though? I think they really need some sort of filter, though I've never tried it without before. :/
