Lets see, I went to the LFS in search of plants....... I ended up with a lot more.

I'm not joking, I need to ban myself for a months or I'm going to go broke. :(

Aside from that, this is the third time they have tested the water for me over a 2 week period. They were the ones that recommended NitroMax and the cycle is almost complete per them. :) My Nitrites are 0, Ammonia is .15 and Nitrates are 4.3. (They use a digital test. I wanted one until they said how much. :( )

So, he sold me 8 Corys (4 for each tank.) He said they are fairly hardy and to just watch the second tank. He said they would be the perfect "Sand Cleaners". ;)

Then he sold me a used Python for $10 w/ 25' hose. :D He did that after learning I was doing water changes on 2 - 55G and I'm adding more, with a 5 Gallon buck.

And he gave me a sweat deal on a bunch of plants (wait till you see the pics of the Amazon!) $5.00 for the whole lot.

And got me a piece of driftwood which he said would help lower the PH.

Now, what did my LFS tell me wrong?

Oh, and he wouldn't let me buy the little spotted puffer till the 45G was all setup AND cycled.... I really wanted him. :( About 1 1/2" and cute as a bell.....

But, I'm glad my LFS wouldn't sell him to me. After he said that, I thought about it and realized just what kind of an error that would have been.

Sounds like a pretty good LFS there. But cories aren't that hardy. But with luck and good water changes they should be fine. More plants will help with the cycle. So sounds like your off to a good start.

He was right about the wood. The tannins and other natural compounds in bogwood will lower pH. How much it will lower the pH depends on the age of the wood and how big the piece is.

If that's a spotted puffer (Green spotted puffer), it's good that you didn't buy it, because unless your 45g is a brackish setup, then he would not have lasted long. And of course, you cannot have cories in a salted tank.

However if it was a spotted puffer (leopard pufffer) then yes, it is suitable for a freshwater tank, but almost certainly will attack tankmates and requires a mature tank.

If it was a tiny puffer with spots (dwarf puffer) then again it is suitable for freshwater but will harrass most tankmates, including cories.

I would need to see pics to know for sure.

Base color was a very light lime green with black spots.

He was tiny, but 95% of the fish this LFS stocks are young...

Hi ddreams :)

What kind of corys did you get? In general I would not recommend getting corys to cycle a tank since they are prone to bacterial infections when they experience stress. Some corys are more delicate than others however.

Yep, that's a greenspot puffer. Brackish and not at all suitable for your tank. Well done for not buying it. :D

Aneus Cory

Paleatus Cory

And I'm not fully using them to per say "cycle" the tank. The top tank is almost completely done cycling, finally (NitroMax does actually speed a cycle thank god) and the bottom tank will be getting water and is already using media from the top tank. :)

But I do see your point. The reason he sold them to me was for something keep the sand clean, since a gravel vac only does so much on sand... :/

yeah, i got a green spotted puffer (Tetraodon nigroviridis), its a good thing agout waiting, they are kinda sensitive but you might be able to get him later because they atart out fresh water and then go brackish and you can even go all the way to full salt water when there adults. so if you want(if he's curently in fresswater which most stores keep them as.)you can get him when yourr tanks cycled and then move him to brackish later. though you still might wanna think bout it cause they dont get along with too many other fish and mine only will eat live food wich can make them kinda hard to keep.

Well, I'm debating. I really wanted to wait and do a Full Reef Tank in the 45G, but now I'm leaning towards a puffer tank.

But as I said, I'm banning myself from the LFS for a few months, so I have time to decide. :)

Well, here is what the trip was for. :)

You will see the Amazon, it had 4 runners i cut off and planted...

Then there are others I need to identify...
