a while back, i had a fish die in a 1.5G container (it was a gourami, when i got him form the lfs i didnt' see that he had a ripped fin and was really skinny, i saw this after i took him off), the others were bullying him so i removed him to his own 1.5G with some salt + melafix, he did'nt pull through the night :rip:

but now i'm wondering how should i go about cleaing his tank and the plants that were in it? bleach? hot water?

Salt water, then rinse really well. I use cooking or sea salt. Don't use any kind of detergent, especially bleach ;)

1.5Gl thats small OK for betas but not for fish u get half a fish in there?! anyways who long ago was it?

salt wouldn't really do the job. 10ml bleach to 100ml warm water and lots of rising should clean it.

link u don't need to rinse wit salt cos it don't really do andy cleanin. and salt is usled as a tonic in tank to help fish recover from illness and should be used wit meds.

But i wouldn't bother it's too small to be of any real use.

i plan to re set it up as a betta recovery tank when the female comes out of breeding. i do keep all my bettas in these 1.5G tanks, but the gourami had it for a few days until he passed away. As far as i know gouramis breathe on top of the surface just like bettas do becuase they have a labryith organ. Obviously he was only there as a quarantine in case he had any other illnesses with him.

thanks for the receipe, i'll try it out

btw thsi was about a week ago.

It's just what I've always used. It's a good cleaning agent ;)

Only ever used it in a salt bath. If I ever get a problem I dont mess around with salt. I diagnose what's wrong, treat quick and work out what caused it so it don't do it again ;)

bicarbonate of soda & water mix

then rinse well

the bicarb wont hurt your fish but might affect the ph if you dont rinse it all out. It is a traditional household cleaner and a mild abrasive. I always clean my tanks with it!!

(i'd be wary of using bleach tbh)

i guess we all have our own ways of cleaning these thigs :D i've used bleach before but spend forever rinsing it out over and over and over and over again and was paranoid for a long time worrying that it'll get to my fish -_-

You never know  that's why I don't use it.

Never tried Bicarb though..hmmmm :shifty:
Cheers Appleblossom ;)

bleach like all chemicals can be nutraliesd. if not sure about wether u've still got bleach in ur tank then just fill with water and wait it should degrade into salt (from wot i heard).

there are tank cleaners that foam up even if it's been highly diluted and so u know if there's anything left in ur tnak u can get this in ur lfs

Oh yeah, nice one Tropjunky ;)

I forgot about those. I think Interpet do a tank cleaning range that does your plants, and tank and all kinds of stuff. Aquarian used to do a tank disinfectant many moons ago. Might work better than anything else ;)
