I am currently cycling a fluval chi 5 gallon (my first nano-tank).Bettas are the only species of fish that would love a 5 gallon (better than a bowl!).
So my question is...How do I choose a super healthy betta that I would not need to worry about having bacterial infections or any other problems.
My supplies include:
Fluval Chi 5 gallon(intigrated light and filter)
Heater
Test Kits
Bloodworms,Flakes, and Brine Shrimp (a variety is good for all fish)
and
Plants-Marimo Moss,Java moss,dwarf hair grass

I would clean the tank with a gravel siphon every week-obviously adding water conditioner and checking parameters, alon with temperature!

Well, depends on how much you want to spend. Breeders have great ones if you can find one online. Check out aquabid if you're in the US. They're also usually much prettier/colorful

Try to get one that's swimming around, but not constantly flaring. Also, don't get any with signs of illness or injuries.

If you don't mind paying shipping, I recommend Chard56 on AquaBid. He has quite a variety: Crowntail, Delta tail, Double tail, Halfmoon, Halfmoon plakat, and Veiltails.
Or darkmoonbettas.com This is where I bought my 6 dragons from. She is really nice and very helpful. Right now she has Halfmoons available. Males and females. Dragons, marbles, and marble dragons.

If you rather get them from the local store, look for one that is alert. Color should look bright, not dull. Should be swimming around. Avoid ones that are overly lethargic, ends of fins look blackened/bloody, or is unresponsive. Usually when you pick up the cup, a healthy betta will respond by moving about.

I also recommend chard56, I got amazing Bettas from him!!

Selecting a healthy Betta is much like selecting any other fish. If it is responsive in its temporary housing and looks good, it is probably fine. If it looks bad or is laying around or unresponsive, give it a pass. There is nothing about a betta that allows me to pick one up that does not look its best. I know many people feel the need to "rescue" bettas but please don't do that. If a betta looks bad enough that you are thinking of it as a rescue, it should stay right where it is.
