How to calculate substrates?

Every substrate is different and trying to follow there directions.

I was looking at Onyx sand and found there's was way wierd.

I tried the ones over at plantedtank.net, but they don't include the sands I'm looking at, only silicon sand which I read is bad for cories.

I was hoping to find out how to calculate how much I need. I'm heading to look at a bunch of tanks tomorrow.

If I pick all of them up, I want to get one up and running asap..... So, I need substrate...

Oh, ok... well, silicon sand and 'normal' sand should be roughly the same in volume, shouldn't they?

Rule of thumb is pound and a half per U.S. gallon of water.

Try this calculator boondocks after you put in the info and click the calculate button it will tell you the weight of the substrate you have entered.
I.E. if you said that the sand was 2" deep and the tank was 24"x12x12 then the wieght of the sand is 30.68 lbf

Oh btw it asks for the thickness on the tank wall, in inches, 6mm is approx .25"
