basic question, ashamed to ask! )
how often should I be changing my carbon and my sponge from my filter?
I apologize if there's already a post about this, most likely is.....

Carbon is only good for one month max. As for the sponge, every 3-4 months is good. You can rinse them when you do your weekly water change (use the old water that you took out of the tank).

I never change my sponge filter, I just rinse it out about once a month in tank water when doing PWC.

If you change your sponge filter, be ready for a mini cycle in your tank.

if you change your sponge that doesnt make it have to cycle. The tank is established and the filter is established also.

The sponge is where the bacteria grow...if you take out the sponge you are removing a lot of good bacteria hence there may be a mini cycle.

I know when my sponges need changing when then start lifting up from the filter...this is in my HOBs....I usually change the canister filters sponges 2 weeks after doing the HOBs...so as not to disturb the bacteria situation too much
