How Many Fish?

Hi,

im sure you have had this question many of times, but how many fish can i put in a 40 litre tank? i current have 6 glow tetras. I really like the dwarf gouramis but is my tank large enough for some? i also like mollys and plateys (i've heard there good starter fish for novices as there easy to maintain and look after)

please can someone advice as i dont want to overstock as i could easierly get carried away!!

There is a formula that you can use, but as i am a beginner i may have got this wrong (Please correct me if this is wrong)

I think you can have 6 inches of fish per gallon (Measure fish at what their fully grown size will be)

I think a 40ltr tank will be about 10 gallons if i can count so you can have 60 inches of fully grown fish.


I do apologise to anyone if i have got this wrong

1 inch of fish per US gallon, not 6inches!
each fish measured at it's ADULT size, and only counts for slim fish 3" and under.
but you also have to take into consideration how active and fast swimming the fish is, for instance Danios still need around 20 gallons ideally as they are so fast swimming and active.

40 litres is about 10 US gallons

i think you may be able to get 1 dwarf gourami in that tank with the tetras, but then i wouldn't put anything else in.

10 gallons is quite a restricting tank size to work with.

thanks you lot.... i was quite suprised, as when i brought the tank the lfs told me that i could easierly get quite a few fish in the tank without any problems... she said about 20-30 small fish or 15-25 medium fish.. i thought 'great'.. gourami's, plateys, guppys, mollys etc... a nice aray of colourful fishes!!

but after joining this forum and reading posts, i think i've relised that in fact my tank is small and i cant get all them wonderful colourful fish i though i could get in the begainning.... and ill have to stick with a few tetras and maybe a few other small fish..

i think ill have to get a bigger tank when i move house in a few months!! my fiance will ove that!! tanks are expensive!
