I have a few stems of wysteria in my tank and it just seems to be growing upwards with no sign of any side shoots at all. I expected it to be like elodea and just shoot off at some point from the stem. but no sign as yet. Got plenty of roots on the stems at the base and the top foliage is nice and green, but the lower foliage seems quite thin hence why I do not want to simply cut the top of the plant off (as it is nearing the the water line) and be left with a thinly leaved stem that will not grow any bushy side shoots!

Any advice welcome!

From what I understand of that plant, you cut it and plant the cutting. The top will grow roots and the bottom will then get new growth. It should work the same as other stem plants. Cutting the tops encourages new growth.
