I am going to go for a planted tank once my tank has finished cycling, a long way to go yet but it gives me plenty of time to do some research and ask questions! I was just wondering how people actually bed their plants in sand?

Say for example you have a plant that comes in a plastic pot when you buy it, do you keep it in the pot and bury it in the sand the best you can or do you have a specific way of planting plants into your tank?

If anyne has some handy tips or home made concoctions then please feel free to advise :)

You should remove all plants from pots, and discard the rock wool around the roots, then just plant them in the substrate, or if they're a plant with a rhizome, tie them to wood or plant them in the substrate ensuring that their rhizome is not buried.

Have a look at this vid and it will explain the ways to plant different aquatic plants.

Best thing is to have at least 2 inches of sand if that's what your using as sand holds plants in place less than things like gravel and planting substrates. Use a pair of tweezers and push the root structure in as deep as possible. Always give the roots a trim first as it will encourage new growth. Always take them out of the pots, remove as much of the foam if there is any, remove the lead weights if any and if it's a rhizome plant like anubias or java fern attach it to wood or rocks. :) hope this helps

Wish I saw that first Ian, took me forever to type all that on an iPhone lol

This is amazing, thank you so much!

I know you need to rinse plants, but do you do it under hot water ( too kill off any bacteria that may be on them?) Or is there another way?

No not hot water, you'll kill the plant. If it were me I'd rinse them in water I'd just taken out the tank for water change.

Do you not have to do something with salt to minimise snails, bugs etc? Sure I heard / read something about a process before sticking them in the tank?
Why do you comment on removing the lead weights?
Thanks
Miles
