How Do You Get Plants To Grow Off Wood?

Im thinking of buying a nice BIG piece of driftwood for my tank, and would like to know how i would go about getting a plant or plants, growing off it.

Is there a certain plant type i should use?

Also, i like the look of the plants which come in small pots, is there any benefit of having the plants in pots? do the pots usually contain any fertilisers which would be good for the plant?

Java fern, Anubis, and almost any kind of moss would do well on driftwood. I would personally take the pot out and bin the green paper thingy.
