so how big of each gender of rainbow fire mouth and salvini cichlids get on average

Rainbow apparently 7" according to THIS

Fire mouth up to 7" but males usually 5" and females 4" Seriouslyfish

Salvini male 6", females 4.5" from THIS

I'm sorry all I have are the links, I havn't kept these fish before. It's generally a good site for info though :)

sweet thanks for the help so do you think a breeding pair of salvini could go in a 40 gallon tank?

Well, going by that link it sounds like that should be okay.

Rainbow cichlids rarely exceed 4inches, it is the salvinis that are more likely to reach 7. They are very aggressive too so forming a pair may be difficult. I suggest buying a group of about 6 juveniles and waiting for a pair to form and then remove the rest.

Hi, I've never owned this fish but I do have friends with them and have seen adults in real life. The salvini males can grow 7-8 inches. They can be quite aggressive and I would personally consider a 50 gallon as a minimum for one adult specimen, maybe a breeding pair would be the very max.

Do you already have your 40 gallon? You originally asked about convict cichlids. I had a pair once and they were great! I gave them to a friend so he could experience the joy and because I wanted to keep other fish in my tank (convict pairs kill everything) The males can grow to be 5-6 inches, females probably 3-4 inches, although it may take 2-3 years and good care for them to get this big. A 40 gallon would be great for a convict only set up. These are some of the easiest fish ever to breed. I would buy 8 one inch long juveniles and let them settle themselves out. Eventually you'll have two dominant pairs. Remove the rest and enjoy watching the two pairs defend fry from one another!
