i have successfuly bred bettas before with adult females about a year ago i gave awa all the babies and my original female is now dead and the other is very old , my male is perfect age bu ti had to buy some young females lovely fish look like crown tails however they are very small although they have a little belly and show an egg spot how big should they be?

i have looked on loads of sites but non e say when they can be bred

4 mos is about the minimum, approx 4-8month being considered prime breeding age. Some can breed at 3 mos, but some re just not mature enought to really know what to do or produce adequate eggs at that age. If she is 4 mos or older and smaller than the male that should work for you. Make sure you condition her so she gets nicely full of eggs. How old is your male?

sadly i dont know as lfs bought but the male looks young not overly developed and very active and the females are a bout 2 cm long. silly me gave away all my beautiful spawn meaning to breed again straight after!

Are the females 2cm including fins? If so they may be too young, or runty, they should prob be 3cm for breeding.... How big is the male, in cm? If his body alone is 3cm, he is prob the right age. They usually don't get full finnage until around 7-8 months. You will get a better idea if you can see them bar up, if the females are mature too....

they do show verticle bars but im going ot wait till the christmas holdiays now they do seem a bit small
