I was concidering building a cave but I dont have the patience to wait for silicone sealant to set, so I was wondering if my hot melt glue gun would be OK. I think the glue is actually some kind of polythene.
All advice greatefully received.
Many thanks
Jim

i dont think it will be okay to use......it has chemicals in doesnt it?

im not 100% sure but thats what i think....sealent only takes 24 hours

I'm with teknikz. I've read a lot of books/articles on aquaria and I've NEVER heard anyone say you could use a hot glue gun. Seeing as lots of people have hot glue guns and not many have aquarium-safe silicone on hand, I'm guessing that if hot glue was safe, somebody would have said so by now.

you could check it in the forum about that sort of stuff (hardware, i think it is  ), but i think patience is probably more sensible. ;)

like they say, patience is the road to happiness (do they say that, or did i just make it up?! :look: )

My girlfriend uses a hot glue gun when she does her crafty things (baskets and scrapbooks). Considering how easily the stuff rips (or falls) off I wouldn't suggest using it. I have no idea if it is safe for aquarium use but I would have to guess not. And who knows if the glue would stay together when put underwater.

I have seen aquarium-safe glue on Ebay, but personally I prefer silicone sealant because you can pull it off if you put it in the wrong place.

Why not wait for silicon sealant to dry. I mean that stuff only takes a few days there's no need to ruch when you put the lives of other animales (or your own for that matter) at risk. Calm down I'm sure your fish don't need a cave that badly, and if they do you should go out and buy one now. B)

Why not wait for silicon sealant to dry. I dont want to wait, as I said, I'm impatient.
I mean that stuff only takes a few days there's no need to ruch when you put the lives of other animales (or your own for that matter) at risk. If I was risking the lives of other animals (I take it you mean my fish) or my own??? I wouldnt have taken the time to ask the question in the first place.
Calm down I'm sure your fish don't need a cave that badly, and if they do you should go out and buy one now. I AM calm, I didnt say I wasn't, you just asumed that. My fish dont need a cave, let alone badly need a cave, and I certainly would not concider buying one.
All I wanted was a definitive answer to my question.
Regards
Jim

I typed in "Hot glue for aquarium use" & hit search, it pulled up one item that actually matched the question at hand & the author of the article uses it to attach plastic plants to suction cups :S there is a photo of his fish w/ the plants...if you care to read it, it's here.....Hot Glue Hope this helps, Fly :D

Fish&Chips - I'm curious to know who has treated you with such disrespect and animosity since your arrival here that you would presume it was standard etiquette on these boards to reply to somebody else's inquiry that way. He had a legitimate question regarding the safety of using hot glue on items intended for the aquarium. Colisa lalia responded to his question in a less than polite manner, he defended himself, and then you jump on him and call him names?? I don't think that kind of language is needed on a friendly forum such as this one.
