Hi I’m jane ,I grew up with fish as my dad built his own tanks ,they were huge! Always tropical so I guess it was always a dream of mine to have my own aquarium someday I have two little dogs n two cats also and would appreciate any tips/ad ice about keeping a tropical fish tank ?I have a 70 litre tank with platys, danios neon/cardinal tetras a cleaner fish n two Angel fish which I bought yesterday,am worried tho as everywhere I read it mentions that they are aggressive towards tetras leading to eating them ? How much of a concern are they please??

Keep the tank well planted, about 50% of the volume and the Angels won't have a chance against the speed of the tetras
Thankyou I intended to buy live plants for shade and protection but my local PAH didn’t have one single plant?

Also this has never happened to me before but since adding the new fish yesterday the water has become very cloudy?I have read that it’s best not to mess with it because it should clear after about a week when the bacteria’s sort them selves out?light is off and they are all just at the top of the tank?

I’d start with a water test to find out your Gh because currently your stocking hard and soft water fish ,
And personally two angles in a 70l is too small

If your unsure about your water hardness contact your water provider the will tell you an average in parts per million , off the top off my head I think down Kent way has slightly hard water not sure tho or take a small sample to you fish shop and they should be able to test it for you and tell you a good stocking for you tabk size and water hardness

Water down here is hard I put internet water safe in when I set the tank up n my existing fish were fine it was once I emptied the new fish in that the problem started??

If you have hard water you need to keep hard water fish. Platies are hard water fish, but neons/cardinals are soft water fish. Danios might be OK depending on just how hard. You can get the number by typing your postcode in here

(A business in Sandgate Road Folkestone has very hard water at 16.8 dH and 300 ppm so yours may be similar)

Angelfish need a much bigger tank than 70 litres as Guyb93 has already said. 2 is also a bad number - if they happen to be 2 males they will fight over territory. A male and female need to be a bonded pair or they too are likely to fight. And neon tetras are their natural prey. I would return them asap.

Since you mention PAH, please be aware that many of their staff are not trained in anything to do with fish other than how to sell them. Never take advice from anyone working there.

To be honest, on-line is the best place for plants, there is much more choice than in real shops.

Welcome!! So happy to see another person from Kent here!

Since angelfish are cichlids, they're naturally kind of aggressive anyway. As Essjay said, 2 isn't a great number to have since they're likely to fight. And, again, like Essjay said, I'd try and source a locally owned, dedicated fish shop rather than a Pets at Home chain. Since they "specialise" in all kinds of animals, almost all of the workers there will have very limited information on fish.

Maidenhead Aquatics chains are good in my experience.

yes, its not just the limited info, some of it is lies told by the store owner because they want you to spend money.

I agree with buying plants online if you don't have a good store around. I bought bacopa online (originally as a butterfly host plant) which my bettas love to sit in and is doing great after many months ?
