So I have 2 Red Honey Gourami's in a 60 Litre community. Both in great shape, eating well. Seem happy, easy to keep.

I've had them about 4 months now. I can see one is quite bigger than the other. I also see one has longer fins, is this the difference between sexes? The larger one has a yellow outline on it's bottom fin at the back, it also has a tiny hint of black on it's top fin at the back. The larger of the two also has a more jagged bottom fin, not in like a rotting manner but in a pattern very similar to a woodsaw.

Also would be great if someone could help me see the differences between male and female?

James. :fun:

Edit: I found some links on the web. I could not find the lead for my phone for my own photos :|

- Thats similar to the one with the yellow outline and the bigger of the two.

http://www.ekkwill.com/ekkwill_1996_30302127.jpg - that is similar to the one without the yellow outline, this one is also smaller.

Great topic, I'd appreciate info about this too.

I'm planning to get 2 female Honeys but someone said they're hard to sex when young so I'm worried i'd end up with a male and female or worse 2 males.

those picture look like two totally different species.

P.S. Chuck Norris doesn't do push ups, he pushes the earth downnnnnn

I can asure you they are both Honey Gourami's.

Anyone else have an input on this? Would be great.

It doesn't look like there are any HG experts on these forums. Or if they are they don't wanna help :(

I think Ludwig runs this section, if we don't get any more advice over the next few days i'll drop him a PM. I'll pass any info onto you Twinkle :)

All I know is that male gouramis have longer and more pointed dorsal fins.

How big have your honeys got after 4 months? We got one the other day but s/he's so much smaller than I had anticipated. Looks great though!

I may have to end up just getting one to be on the safe side. I've calculated for 2 though coz someone said they'll be happier with a friend. I'll just have to hope that the LFS I choose will be able to accurately pick me 2 females

I've got the same prob with Platys, I can't sex them either. I don't think it's gonna be my strong point!lol

Male Platy's have a pointed anal fin, wheras female have a fan shaped. I think males are more colourful aswell.

However in Platy's, the anal fin only become more noticible with age, so if you have young Platy's it may seem you have all females but in reality you could have males.

I'm planning to get all male Platys. I can't accomodate fry really.

Bum so I could have the same problem with them. It would see with both Platys and Gouramis that if you get them young it can be kind a lucky dip. :(

We have a Platy and Honey Gourami + a Black molly, but the Platy and Gourami often pair up and swim around the tank together.

I was considering just getting 1 HG and hoping she just makes friends with the Platys.

Are you getting more fish Joshua?
