...................i'm about to take delivery of a 190 litre corner fish tank :hyper: ,its been about 3 years since i had fish last as something killed nearly all my fish last time :shout: and i lost heart in it all  but i'm back with it now for good cos the time away really made me remember what i was missing. i want tropical and something a bit different so....

...MY QUESTION TO YOU GUYS IS-

what sort of set up would you go for and fish to get the really great looking, relaxing look??? :good:

Hi Beard and :hi: to Tropical Fish Forums,

You seem to have picked a nice tank there. Is it a Juwel Trigon, Fluval Venezia?

Anyway, if you want the relaxing look, you probably want slow moving fish. Something like a few Angelfish with a big shoal of Rummy-Nose Tetras or Harlequin Rasboras to compliment them.

Theres loads to choose from and you'd probably be best to do some research and come back with fish that you like, and then we could tell you if they are compatible etc.

Out of interest, have you thought about how you are going to prepare your tank for fish? Have you heard of fishless cycling?

Cheers

BTT

Yes, Welcome to TFF!

hey there guys.

thanks for the replys, i've just done a little search on the net and seen there is a few bad points to the tank i'm waitin for.
its the FLUVAL VENEZIA 190. should i cancel the order or keep my fingers crossed that i wont be struck down with the same sort of problems?

BTT,i'm gonna be setting the tank up for at least a week without any fish due to the fact that i've got to do loads before i can play with the fish.

i've got to pull down a wall and rebuild it a couple of inch's back, build a new doorway to the kitchen, build all new furniture for the living room (when it turns up)
re decorate the livingroom and decorate the kitchen.

ALL THIS just cos the misses wants to move the sofa. (a big corner one)

I've not heard of any problems with the Venezia. What kind of issues have you read about?

Also, glad we caught you before you add the fish. Adding fish to an unprepared tank can expose them to lethal ammonia and nitrite. There is a method of preparing the filter to take care of these toxic chemicals before the fish are added. It's called fishless cycling. Can I convince you to look into it? There is a link all about it in my signature below.

If you just add the fish, you will almost certainly run into problems, if not have fish die.

Cheers :good:

i've just heard they leak and have problems with twisting. PLEASE tell me i'll be fine with this tank cos i've got my heart set on it now.

i had a look through the fishless cycle thread and must admit that i've never heard of doing that before when I had my last tank. I will have to have another read through it so that I get everything right this time.

Is there anything else I need to do before putting in the fish? How long do you think the whole procees before I can put the fish in will take? I am not trying to rush it would just like to get an idea of it all.

thanks for the advice so far. :good:

i'm gonna pop down to a couple of shops tomorrow i've been told about and a pets at home aquatic center i've seen near me but is there any good books you could recommend to me that i can pick up tomorrow cos i'm not always near a pc to be hitting this fantastic forum. :good:

Books i'm not to sure on, but as for pets at home, if mine is anything to go by i wouldn't buy from them, NONE of the staff had a clue about the fish their living conditions or what can go with what, they advised me that i could have an angel (4 of), siamese fighter (4 of), red tail shark (3 of), neons(15 of) and male guppies (12 of) in my 110ltr tank  , i would suggest trying to find a LFS who only deal in fish.

Hi, nice tank I nearly went for that one myself - I went the vision 260 instead, as to the cycle time Q. I am on 14 days and it seems to going ok another two-three weeks to go before it is ready.

It may seem like a long time to some people - but I have added fish to an unready tank before then wondered why I lost most of them.

The fishless cycling is the humane (fishmane) way to go as "healthy tank = healthy fish" if you know anybody locally who has a Mature tank you could always ask them for a little of their mature media "filter foam or inserts" as this will speed things up.

I agree with GS above, try to find a fish store rather than a shed retailer good to look at the fish though.

just a side note dont bother with the product that claim to put bateria in to the tank (bateria in a bottle) by all accounts they don't work.

Anyway good luck.

Paul.

I have read many of the "starter" (and otherwise) books out there and in my opinion, for help with tank startup and learning the basics, the power of a forum like this just completely eclipses the books. While web forums may have their problems in the serious scientific world and many other areas, they are fantastic for things like hobbyies I think.

Sorry about your problems getting easy internet access, I hope you can somehow get that worked out as this forum would probably be just a fantastic way for you to learn the hobby in a way you didn't before.

Good Luck!
